Quote of the day
From Bookslut
"Today's librarians aren't all old women with glasses and their hair pulled back in buns, reports the AP. Also, today's police officers aren't all fat Irish guys who swing their night sticks jauntily about while giving shiny pennies to street urchins and telling them to stay out of trouble. And today's newspaper reporters don't have cards that say 'PRESS' stuck in the bands of their fedoras, and almost never say 'What a scoop!'"

Damn. And here I was, all ready to throw my career at the feet of journalism, just so that I could wear a fedora with a "PRESS" card stuck in it. I guess I can pretty much still wear the hat like that, but it won't mean as much.

I dunno--walking the streets swinging a nightstick and saying things like "Here now, boyo!" to miscreants sounds like more fun to me. Or at least, it would if I weren't so timid when it comes to being beaten up.
Mainly, I thought this was hysterical because EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE about librarians has some line in it about how "modern" librarians are more Carrie Bradshaw than Marian the Librarian or something stupid like that. It's pretty obvious that reporters, besides not wearing fedoras anymore, also don't ever visit the library.
They do the same thing with comics (people who obviously haven't picked up a comic since 1976 write stuff like "Visit your local comic shop and you'll find a new fad--it's called a graphic novel, and it's not just for the kiddies anymore!") and Michael and Jessa at Bookslut always call them on it. I love those two.
