Provenance

The story of how Schindler's List came to be: .

Green days

Michael McGrorty writes about Howard Pyle and Robin Hood. I could picture the illustrations has was talking about--my copy was one of those "keepsake" books that I got as a series of Christmas presents from aunts and uncles that included Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, and a a fair amount of Arthuriana--not to mention later fantasy stuff like Faeries, Gnomes, and Giants. I'm certain that this is why Christmas always makes me think I'm in ancient Britain. Two or three years ago, on Christmas day, I remember looking through a wavy window at the Norman-inspired tower of the church across the street as snow drifted down through the trees and thinking this is just right.

Wow.

Friends don't let friends get their senior pics done by cheesy photographers.

Weekend reading

A lovely idea, and a lovely implementation: ClassicReader.com : Read, search and annotate classic literature.

Thanks, suckers

The Propaganda Remix Project has 42 new posters up. You could try to convince me that Gerald Gregg was not the original artist on some of the WWII posters. You'd be unsuccessful. Look at that airbrush technique... the sinister hands and skulls...

Everything old is new again (or will be)

The Vintage Reader needs a redesign, maybe even a repurposing. So over the next couple of weeks, as I transfer everything to my new ISP and get the domain transferred as well, I won't be posting a lot. I might do the redesign myself; I might use one of the lovely new Blogger templates. Either way, expect something different shortly.
